A swan takes to the air at Lower Bruckland Nature Reserve, Devon. Photography by Kerrie Ann Gardner.

This was taken at a local nature reserve called Lower Bruckland Farm, near Seaton in Devon. The reserve is punctuated by a series of lakes which on a still morning act as perfect mirrors for the sky. The sun had just risen when this magnificent mute swan began to run across the water in an attempt to power himself into the air. I quickly snapped the action and thought no more of it, until I got home and found this picture hiding on my memory card. The light was perfect, highlighting the spay behind him in a a rich gold, and the shape of his wings reflected in the water before him added an extra dimension to his dramatic take off.
