‘Little King’ Painted Stone

Long ago, the birds held a contest to decide who should be their king. They all agreed that whoever could fly the highest would be awarded the honour. They took off together but one by one, many birds returned to the earth. It was only the Eagle who continued to rise higher and higher. Satisfied that he had won the competition, the eagle readied himself to declare that he was the winner, when suddenly a small brown bird, which had hitherto been hiding in his feathers, flew above the Eagle and called out (in a voice that seemed too loud for such a small bird) “I am king!” And so it was that the clever little Wren became the king of the birds.
