‘Crocus’ Painted Stone

A welcome bit of colour on a cold, February day, the Spring Crocus (Crocus vernus) is an important source of nectar for early insects, such as queen Bumblebees. It represents cheerfulness, and appears in Greek mythology in the tale of Crocus, a young man who had a love affair with a nymph called Smilax.
