‘Storm Petrels’ Painted Stone

Storm Petrels are small seabirds which spend the majority of their lives out at sea. When breeding they return to their nests under the cover of darkness to help them avoid predation. Nests are hidden deep within dry stones walls, old buildings and beneath pebbled beaches.

On Mousa, a small island off the coast of mainland Shetland, thousands of these elusive birds return each year to raise their chicks. It’s a magical sight to see them all return as dusk settles, many of them circling the ancient broch where they breed.
